Zero waste for biomedical engineering students

New vice-president of outreach has a sustainability mandate

The  (BMEG) has added a new executive position with a sustainability mandate to assist the University of Calgary in its commitment to sustainability and its goal to become a zero waste campus.

The new position, vice-president (outreach), ensures BMEG employs sustainable practices in its operations and recruits members of the association to give back to the community.

BMEG is working to make association events waste-free, using either recyclable or compostable cups, plates, utensils, and food packaging. It is also keeping the Human Performance Laboratory’s comprehensive waste diversion infrastructure on track, partnering with Facilities Management to include Kinesiology B as one of the first buildings to implement a desk-side recycling pilot program.

“I think that the most important thing BMEG can do is increase awareness in as many students as possible and make it easy for people to start participating in sustainability initiatives,” said Krysta Powers, BMEG’s vice-president (outreach).

Krysta and other BMEG members are in turn working with the Office of Sustainability to provide volunteers at waste free events hosted by other student groups and departments that help attendees sort their waste and educate them about what goes in each bin.
